SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATE

 

Purpose Statement

 

The position of Special Education Associate is to help special education teachers provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education and/or general education setting.  Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs.  Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

 

Job Title: Special Education Associate 

 

Hourly Wage:  $14.75/full-time

 

Hours:  M,T,TH,F 8:00-3:45 / Wed. 9:00-3:45

 

Reports To:   Building Principal and teacher(s) assigned  

 

Wage/Hour Status:  Non-Exempt

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience working with children, preferred

To help students acquire identified deficit skills in order to contribute to their development as productive and responsible citizens.

Performance Responsibilities and Duties

 

Instructional Support

  1. Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  2. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  3. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  4. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  5. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Student Management

  1. Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  2. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Other

  1. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  2. Assist with academic, social, emotional, and health needs of students.
  3. Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
  4. Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
  5. Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with all school personnel.
  6. Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
  7. Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
  8. Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations
  1. Performs any other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
  2. Assist with particular health needs of students (i.e. feedings, busing, mobility, general hygiene, toileting and distribution of medications).
  3. Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.

Other Functions

  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Working Environment

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands:  some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity.  Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires the ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Successful candidate is subject to post-offer pre-employment physical.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

 

 

Equipment Used:

Computer, copier, and audiovisual equipment, wheelchair, wheelchair lifts, other mobility aids and other OT/PT apparatus.

Terms of Employment

Work year established by the Superintendent; Salary according to schedule adopted annually.

Job performance will be evaluated annually as per district policies and procedures
