Before & After School Program – Program Assistant

 

Purpose Statement

The role of Before & After School Program – Program Assistant is to engage with students and assist the teacher in providing fun, hands-on activities to ensure a quality, safe experience.

 

 

Job Title: Before & After School Program – Program Assistant

Hourly Rate: $14.00/hour, based on qualifications and experience

Job Details 

Employment dates: August – June

  • Hours: Monday – Friday 6:15 – 7:45 a.m.
  • Hours: Monday – Friday 2:45 – 6:00 p.m. 
  • No-School Day Camps – required availability 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., as enrollment requires
  • Extended Break Camp (winter, spring) – required availability 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., as enrollment requires
  • Inclement Weather Program Days – per Handbook inclement weather hours

 

Position hours vary and are part-time.  Total weekly hours will not exceed 29.75; exact hours are per individual employment agreement.  Positions are scheduled in sessions (approximate 9-week increments).  Length of contract: one session with the opportunity to extend the position for additional sessions throughout the program year, pending satisfactory performance evaluation.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 16 years of age
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with students
  • Team player with exceptional human relations skills 
  • Ability to read lesson plans
  • Ability to take direction and perform tasks with little supervision
  • Ability to perform multiple duties simultaneously
  • Exemplary organizational skills
  • Ability to be flexible with a willingness to learn
  • Ability to implement program procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with school-age youth
  • Experience managing groups of school-age youth

Essential Functions

  • Administer quality Before & After School Program while adhering to District policy, program procedure, and Iowa Department of Human Services minimum standards.
  • Firm understanding of District and program policy and procedures, and Iowa Department of Human Services minimum standards, to maintain student safety and security, and to respond appropriately to parent inquiries/concerns.
  • Communicate program expectations and procedures clearly, effectively, and in a positive manner to students.
  • Compile and maintain accurate student attendance, databases, and communication logs.
  • Successfully implement positive student behavior management techniques.
  • Successfully assist with implementing high-quality, hands-on, engaging, and age-appropriate academic-enrichment and recreational curriculum/programs.
  • Actively participate and engage in activities with students; not just supervise or observe.
  • Present a positive image of the program while providing exemplary customer care and following program procedures to safely dismiss students from the program.
  • Establish a positive, supportive, and working relationship with site leader(s) and site staff team.
  • Develop and maintain an effective level of communication with appropriate personnel, including program staff, district administrators, and the program manager.  Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.  
  • Demonstrate responsible control over assigned program resources.  Ensure materials and supplies are available.
  • Attend work regularly, routinely, and on time.  Find approved substitute for absences when necessary.
  • Monitor Before & After School Program facility maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Maintain a continuing program of personal professional development, including active participation in required trainings and meetings to improve program quality and ensure compliance with Iowa Department of Human Services minimum standards.  Actively implement program initiatives and new learning, as required.
  • Have, or be able to obtain, current adult and child CPR and First Aid Certification with AED training within designated timeline.
  • Assist with special event programming, field trips, and guest speakers.
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required on a limited basis. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or Site Leader(s).

 

Working Environment 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands:  significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity.  Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress. 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; directing the use of budgeted funds within a work unit; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

 

Supervision

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
May be assigned the management, coordination, and evaluation of classified employees assigned to the school.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy.  These employees are not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
