Substitute Custodian
Purpose Statement
The role of Substitute Custodian is to create a clean, orderly, and safe environment by performing a wide variety of cleaning and maintenance activities on building campuses. Custodians ensure each campus is attractive, sanitary, and safe for students, staff, and visitors. Duties may include performing daily cleaning operations, assisting and preparing our building for activities and campus events, and working collaboratively with the custodian team, maintenance team and building team.

Hourly Wage: $14.65/Hour
Reports To: District Custodian Manager
Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED, preferred
- Ability to read basic operating instructions
- Demonstrates a reasonable degree of computer proficiency
Essential Functions
- Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Monitors activities in and around work areas (e.g. halls, multipurpose rooms, lunch room, restrooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety.
- Performs minor, job related, maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
- Prepares campus for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkway, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and hazard free.
- Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors for the purpose of providing information, taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.
- Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer construction.
- Supports District maintenance staff (e.g. grounds, trades, general maintenance, etc.) for the purpose of completing site custodial activities.
- Informs site personnel for the purpose of providing information and direction regarding activities, safety issues and/or proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Attends meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
Physical Requirements
- Be able to lift loads not to exceed 75 pounds.
- Be able to climb and work from a ladder, scaffold and personal lift.
- Be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
Other Functions
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
- Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
- Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with school personnel and works well with other custodians on jobs that require more than one person.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
- Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to
- district operations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Working Environment
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform position functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.
