Maintenance Utility

 

Purpose Statement

The role of utility worker is generally responsible for cleaning and maintaining our district’s premises and equipment. Utility workers have a diverse job that may change on a day to day basis.  Generally, it is the utility worker’s role to maintain the upkeep of our district’s facilities, repair broken equipment, inspect finished projects, and comply with state health and safety regulations and working collaboratively with the custodian team, maintenance team and building teams. 

 

Job Title:  Maintenance Utility          

Hourly Wage: $18.00/hr.

Hours: 6:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M., Winter hours varied

Reports To: Maintenance Manager 

Wage/Hour Status:  Non-Exempt

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, preferred
  • Ability to read basic operating instructions
  • Demonstrates a reasonable degree of computer proficiency
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Non-Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires that the individual is able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Successful candidates are subject to post-offer pre-employment physical.

 

Essential Functions 

  • Performs minor, job related, maintenance on equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items. 
  • Assists with general maintenance and care of school campuses and district facilities which may include mowing and snow removal. 
  • Assists with cleaning assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, sports fields, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Monitors activities in and around work areas for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety. 
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.
  • Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors, moves furniture, painting, mowing, cleaning, etc.) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer construction. 
  • Informs site personnel for the purpose of providing information and direction regarding activities, safety issues and/or proper maintenance of facilities and equipment. 
  • Attends meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Operating Ankeny Community School District vehicles as assigned. Driving a company vehicle is contingent on a driving background check.

  • Participate in staff development training programs.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.                
  • Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
  • Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with school personnel and works well with other custodians on jobs that require more than one person. 
  • Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
  • Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program. 
  • Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to   
  • district operations.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others. 
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution. 
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Must be open to a possible on-call rotation as deemed necessary by management.

 

Working Environment 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands:  significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity.  Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.

Work year established by the Superintendent; Salary according to schedule adopted annually.
