Substitute Building Nurse
Purpose Statement
The position of Substitute Building Nurse is to provide direct health services to individual students, parents/guardians and staff. Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the school health services program.
Job Title: Substitute Building Nurse
Hourly Wage: RN $140 per day/ BSN: $150 per day
Reports To: Building Principal
Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Hours: Vary based on building, location, and need
Minimum Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse with valid Iowa licensure
- Current CPR certification
- Prior experience in school nursing, or acute care setting
Essential Functions
- Work well with school personnel, parents, and the public.
- Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of current practices for common childhood illnesses and chronic disease: asthma management, diabetes, insulin pen and pumps, seizure management
- Ability to perform skilled nursing care
- Administers medications and treatment as ordered.
- Provider care for student and staff illness and accidents.
- Administers care based on individual health care plans and individual emergency care plans.
- Serves as liaison between the home and the school regarding student health concerns.
- Document all encounters in the health record system.
- Follows communicable disease control procedures and informs administration and/or parents regarding school exclusion and readmission.
Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform position functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.
