Assistant Varsity Coach
Purpose Statement
The role of Assistant Coach will assist the head coach in the organization, development, and leadership of the athletic program in support of the mission and core values of the Ankeny Community School District. Duties may include coordinating practice planning, skill development, and designing strategies which prepare the team for competition; mentoring student-athletes; assisting with camps; collaborating with other coaches; and demonstrating adherence to district, conference, and state association rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid coaching license through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners or the ability to obtain it prior to the start of the season.
- Previous experience coaching, preferred.
- Strong knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, instruct, and supervise students athletes and a coaching staff.
- Ability to work under pressure and remain calm.
Essential Functions
- Attend and effectively coach in all scheduled games:
- Dates to be determined by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and/or Iowa Girls High School Association (IGHSAU)
- Collaborate with the head coach in developing and promoting off season programs and opportunities for student athletes.
- Collaborate with the head coach and other coaching staff, as appropriate, on instructional strategies, organization of practices, supervision guidelines, responsibilities for the purposes of developing the program at all levels, apply and enforce all student discipline during athletic contests and ensure student athletics maintain sportsmanship in all phases of the competition.
- Teach and promote athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect and sportsmanship.
- Be present for any and/or all practices.
- Assess student performance for purposes of providing feedback on his/her individual performance and/or determining team placement.
- Adhere to injury prevention procedures established by Ankeny CSD.
- Collaboratively work to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and indirectly by working closely with administration, cheerleaders, pep clubs, boosters, etc.
- Take precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist head coach with monitoring and enforcing student eligibility criteria for participation.
- Accompany and supervise students on assigned athletic activities competitions.
- Maintain all pertinent information student-athlete personal and medical files, as required by the Activities Department.
- Maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment within the program.
- Be familiar with and adhere to the coaches handbook, employee handbook, Board of Educational Examiners Professional Code of Ethics and Conduct, and board polices, especially those governing student non-discrimination, anti-harassment, bullying, mandatory reporting, student record confidentiality, and other pertinent policies.
- Advise students and parents on the athletic code of conduct, including consequences for violation, and coordinate with the Activities Director in instances of possible violations of the code of conduct.
- Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, training, etc for the purpose of receiving and conveying information to enhance the program.
- Annually establish and meet performance goals.

- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
- Demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
- Uphold and adhere to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Support the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
- Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
