Purpose Statement
The position of Education Interpreter – Hearing Impaired is to help teachers provide for physical and instructional needs of students with hearing disabilities in the school setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Must apply and obtain a Valid Iowa Department of Professional Licensure, Board of Sign Language Interpreters & Translators
- Knowledge of correct English usage, conceptually accurate signed English (American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience working with children, preferred
Essential Functions

Performance Responsibilities and Duties
- Facilitate effective communication between two parties.
- Attend conferences and meetings and act as the official translator for the school and student/families to mediate discussions.
- Translate educational materials and informational materials issued by the school and district to support student learning.
- Employ computer-assisted translation, when needed.
- Inform supervisor immediately when interpreting sensitive and/or reportable issues.
- Interpret both legal terminology and colloquial language.
- Encourage students and families to participate in school activities and promote school involvement.
- Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with all school personnel.
- Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Assist with academic, social, emotional, and health needs of students.
- Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
Other Functions
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires the ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Successful candidate is subject to post-offer pre-employment physical.
